When I first became a Christian I read the Bible (King James) cover to cover three or four times and then didn’t read it on a regular basis for years. This year and I hope for many years to come I’m trying to establish the daily disciple. Today I am reading the New Living Translation (Tyndale) I refer to a New International Version (Zondervan) and Logos Bible Study software (vs. 4) to really get down to it.
I’d be interested to know if any of you who read this blog have read, do read or desire to read the Bible on a regular basis? And if you follow a reading plan which do you use and why? As I said when I was saved I started in Genesis and finished in Revelation, then went back and started again. For the last few months I’ve on and off tried to get into the disciple using a “Balanced Method of Bible Reading and Study that our pastor favours. But, to me, it’s lack of continuity is in itself a distraction. I think I’m next going to try the 365-day reading plan in the back of my Bible (NLT). It does not cause one to read the entire Bible, verse by verse. Instead, “it offers a complete view of Scripture and does so without being overwhelming.” “By skipping past material that appears more than once, it gives you a streamlined look at the entire Bible.”
This method appeals to me as much of Numbers and Leviticus which I find to be a real slog to get through are excluded. And yet, we still spend 6-months of the year in the Hebrew text (Old Testament) and the other 6-months in the New Testament.
I don’t know about you but when I acknowledge what is going on all around us, everyday, in this world I can not not but believe that we are in the last days. All my life I’ve heard well meaning learned Bible teachers as well as some religious kooks, zealots preach hell fire and brimstone – the end of the World is upon us Repent, Repent, etc. etc. Actually every once and while I really enjoy a good old hell fire and brimstone sermon which reminds me of tent meetings and such <smile>.
